Dear John, last July the pavement on Riverside Avenue reached 52 °C. There isn't a single street tree along its two miles — and it's where 3,000 children walk to school.
This October, 140 volunteers will plant 500 native oaks, maples and lindens along the avenue, and water them through their first three summers. In twenty years, they'll cool the street by up to 6 degrees.
